CALGARY -- Brad Trelivings first major move as new Calgary Flames general manager was to beef up the front office. He named former Flame forward Craig Conroy and former Hockey Canada executive Brad Pascall as his new assistant general managers Friday. Conroy and Pascall join Mike Holditch, who has held that title since 2010. "Having depth, having manpower, allows us to see more and do more," Treliving said at Scotiabank Saddledome. "Everything we do here when we look at adding staff and we look at adding people, this is all about building and this is about winning. "To me, you need to build your foundation off the ice before you can ever think of having success on the ice." Treliving, 44, was revealed as the Flames new GM on April 28. The Flames were grooming Conroy for the managerial ranks before Trelivings arrival. Conroy went to work immediately as a special assistant to former GM Jay Feaster after retiring in 2011. Conroys apprenticeship accelerated in December when president of hockey operations Brian Burke fired Feaster. Conroy had more responsibilities in the four months Burke searched for a replacement before deciding on Treliving. "All of a sudden, everyone had more to do," Conroy said. "Now you can really focus in on an area and really nail down what were going to do moving forward." The 42-year-old from Potsdam, N.Y., played 1,009 NHL regular-season games, just over half of them with the Flames. He also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues. Pascall worked for Hockey Canada for almost two decades in different roles. He was most recently vice-president of hockey operations for the last four years. He was part of the management groups that assembled the victorious Canadian mens hockey teams for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. "I think the evolution of my experience of being involved with various championship teams and building an organization there from a high-performance structure, I think it was always an aspiration of mine to one day move onto the National Hockey League," Pascall said. The 43-year-old from Coquitlam, B.C., was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1990 and played four years of minor pro hockey. His wife is Cassie Campbell-Pascall, who led the Canadian womens hockey team to Olympic gold in 2002 and 2006 as team captain. Holditchs area of expertise is salary cap and contracts. Pascall will oversee Calgarys American Hockey League team which is moving to Glens Falls, N.Y., next season from Abbotsford, B.C. Conroy will spend the most time of the road of the three, Treliving said, watching NHL and minor pro games in order to help with player decisions. "I think you ought to be careful that youre not tripping over people, but the way I look at it is you get the right people on the bus, you get winners on the bus, well figure out all the rest," Treliving said. "The game is becoming bigger each day, becoming more competitive each day, so the question we ask every morning when we roll out of bed is how do we win? How do we win and how do we get better? We got better today. Well keep all three of these guys busy." Calgary missed the playoffs for a fifth straight season with a record of 35-40-7. Chicago held Brooklyn to 29 points on 26.LONDON - Manchester United was repeatedly thwarted by Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in a scrappy 0-0 draw on Sunday but will go into the second half of the Premier League season re-established as a top-four team.On the slide a year ago in sixth at the midway point, United is now third after extending its unbeaten run to nine matches and primed to return to the Champions League under Louis van Gaal. With leader Chelsea and second-placed Manchester City also drawing, the result was a missed opportunity for United to cut the seven-point gap.Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Ashley Young were all denied by the France goalkeepers saves. Although Phil Jones headed the ball into the net in the first half, the United defender was adjudged to be offside. It was the best performance of Manchester United this season in the first half, Van Gaal said. We could have scored four or five goals and we didnt reward ourselves. The blame was not put on Uniteds misfiring strikers but on the football authorities for scheduling the game less than 43 hours after the teams finished their Friday fixture in Englands traditionally congested post-Christmas program. It is scientifically proven the body cannot recover in 48 hours, said Van Gaal, who still retained the same players who started in Fridays 3-1 win over Newcastle. When you, as a Football Association, allow, you have seen whats its like ... in the second half it wasnt football anymore it was a struggle for life. But both teams had the same recovery period, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino pointed out.dddddddddddd.I never complain when the opponent is in the same condition as you, Pochettino said. And Tottenham went a fifth game unbeaten to provisionally move above Arsenal into sixth, just a point from fourth-place Southampton. It required Lloris to be alert throughout, with the goalkeeper first denying Falcaos 18th-minute shot after the Colombia forward was fed by the lively Juan Mata.Lloris was beaten when Mata whipped in a free kick but spared by the post. When the rebound came off Tottenham defender Ben Davies, Lloris prevented an own goal before Vlad Chiriches cleared Falcaos attempt from the goal-line.The ball did cross the line from Jones header, but he was offside. The finishing then let down United as a counterattack ended with a shot from Falcao that failed to trouble Lloris, who came also came off his line to prevent a dithering Van Persie from shooting.Lloris had to be at full stretch to turn Youngs shot wide before the end of a half when Tottenhams goal attempts were restricted to Harry Kanes ineffective close-range effort and Andros Townsend from distance.Townsend again tried and failed to beat David de Gea with a stinging shot from the outside of the area in a second half when neither side looked capable of scoring.I said in the dressing room when you cannot win such type of matches when you are the better team ... its very difficult to be the champion at the end of the season, Van Gaal said.
