AKRON, Ohio -- Phil Mickelson has no doubt what will be most remembered from his career. "It will always be the 04 Masters and showing off my Olympic jumping ability," he cracked of his celebratory hop, which will never be mistaken for Michael Jordan leaving the launch pad. But theres also no question in his mind of what he thinks is his most significant victory. "For me, personally, (winning) the British Open is the greatest accomplishment I could ever get in my career," he said Tuesday, nine days after capturing the claret jug at Muirfield with a stirring final-round flourish. After a week off, preparing on Monday for next weeks PGA Championship and now trying to focus on this weeks Bridgestone Invitational, Mickelson remains stunned that he actually won an event he thought would always be out of his grasp. He still isnt convinced he actually did it. "Im looking forward to in the coming years looking back and remembering Muirfield, remembering the 13 Open and remembering all the things that happened on that back nine," he said during preparations for the Bridgestone Invitational, which begins Thursday. Mickelson always felt an affinity for Augusta National and the Masters, where he won in 2004, 06 and 10. He erased all the speculation of whether he would ever win a major in 2004, when he rolled in the clinching birdie putt on the 18th and "leaped," his spikes barely leaving the ground. "I always knew that I was going to win the Masters because I had played well there for so many years," he said. He also believed he could win a PGA Championship, which he crossed off his list in 2005 at Baltusrol. Sure, there was the lingering heartache of continually being a bridesmaid at the U.S. Open -- a record six times. But at least he was a threat to win it many years. He thought he did this year at Merion. But he was wrong, as were all of those who thought he was a lock to win Americans national championship at some point long before this. "I had something happen to me Sunday morning of the U.S. Open that was really weird," he said in an almost conspiratorial tone. "When I woke up, I had dreamt that I had already won the U.S. Open." He felt euphoria. He felt himself lifting the trophy, the gallery roaring for a long awaited and much anticipated triumph. "It took me over a minute to realize that I havent played the final round and that Ive still got to go out and do it," he said. "And I still have not won it." The British Open, however, was never his cup of Earl Grey. He floundered in the wind and sideways rain, struggled in the heather and high weeds, fell apart while others made late charges. He was seldom even near the leaderboard. But that all changed at Muirfield. Hes still pinching himself. "It was so difficult for me to play my best golf in the British Open under those conditions than any other tournament," he said. "To win that is the greatest accomplishment for me in my career." Now hes trying to focus on whats next, instead of what just happened. Thats not easy, but he shows signs of coming out of his post-Muirfield celebration, just in time for the final major of the year, the PGA at Oak Hill. "Theres an opportunity to add to this year and make it every bit as special as it can be," he said, looking ahead. "I want to make sure I give myself every chance to play well because Ive been playing some of my best golf the last few months." Hes primed to continue it. His close friend and Ryder Cup partner, Keegan Bradley, was joking around with Mickelson a couple of days ago. Bradley is the defending champion of the Bridgestone, and teased Mickelson about the lofty title placed on every British Open champion. "We were double-checking that we were going to play (a practice round at the Bridgestone) on Tuesday, and I said, I know youre the Champion Golfer of the Year, but Ill teach you how to play Akron if you want. He only responded with, I won there when you were 9 years old." Cheap Yeezys Ireland . LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- A winning record, a shot at the playoffs and just about all hope for something positive got squashed almost as soon as the season started. The Chicago Bears have that in common with the San Francisco 49ers. But at least they have won since the season opener.San Francisco will try to snap a franchise-record 10-game losing streak when it visits Chicago in a matchup between two of the NFLs worst teams on Sunday. The 49ers (1-10) have not won since they opened with a 28-0 win over Los Angeles, though its not like the Bears (2-9) have fared much better.I think these guys have been fantastic in terms of their approach every day, San Francisco coach Chip Kelly said. Both teams have been hit hard by injuries and poor play in general. Theyre simply looking for some signs of progress in the final stretch of a dismal season. You are only as good as your record says you are, Bears linebacker Willie Young said. Weve been battling, from A to Z, weve been battling. I really feel that this year, with all of the young guys that we have, and even guys coming from winning organizations who are not familiar with dealing with adversity like such, I really think its going to help and build us as a team in the future. Here are some things to know as the 49ers try to end their slide against the struggling Bears:BARKLEYS CHANCE: Chicagos Matt Barkley will try to build on a promising performance in last weeks 27-21 loss to Tennessee .He threw for a career-high 316 yards and his first three touchdowns as a pro with Jay Cutler sidelined by a right shoulder injury, and he led a fourth-quarter rally that came up short when Josh Bellamy dropped a pass in the end zone in the final minute. Now, hes about to meet the coach who drafted him . The former Southern California quarterback was taken by Philadelphia in the fourth round in 2013 but wasnt seen as a good fit for Kellys offense because he is not particularly mobile.Barkley appeared in four games with the Eagles before getting traded in 2015 to Arizona, where he never played. He signed with Chicago in September and is a getting a chance with Cutler, Brian Hoyer and Connor Shaw all injured.KAEPERNICKS COMEBACK: Colin Kaepernick is starting to perform like its 2012 again.Benched midway through last year and limited by injuries during the offseason, he is oonce again showing the form that made him one of the most promising young quarterbacks.dddddddddddd. And it seems Kellys system suits him.It gives you an opportunity to run a wide-open offense and theres a lot of clarity in the quarterbacks mind, as far as what we want to do, how were trying to get things done, which is very advantageous, he said.Kaepernick threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns against Miami last week . He also ran for 113 yards and nearly led a late tying driving before being tackled at the 2 as time expired, ending another solid performance for a player who has been coming on strong. He struggled in his first two starts after regaining the No. 1 spot from Blaine Gabbert. But its been a different story the past four games.Kaepernick has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 1,110 yards, eight TDs, two interceptions and a 96 rating. He has also rushed for 223 yards in that span, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.HANG ON: Bears receivers will have to do a better job this week.Chicago dropped 10 passes against Tennessee, an unacceptable number even without the suspended Alshon Jeffery and injured Kevin White and tight end Zach Miller. Marquess Wilson was among those with at least one drop, though he did set career highs with eight catches for 125 yards.TURNOVERS: San Francisco is having trouble hanging onto the ball, and Chicago cant seem to take it away. The 49ers are tied for fifth with 20 turnovers -- three shy of the league lead. They had a tough time against the Dolphins, losing a fumble at the Miami 16 and having a deflected pass intercepted to give Miami the ball at the San Francisco 26.The Bears have just eight takeaways. Only Jacksonville (seven) has fewer.FLORIDA STAY: Rather than fly home between games at Miami and Chicago, the 49ers decided to stay in the Sunshine State. So they spent the week in Orlando practicing at the University of Central Florida. The coach there is Scott Frost, who worked on Kellys staff at Oregon. Its not about packing up and coming to Orlando, Kelly said. It was about not going back. So, it saves you on travel and wear and tear.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL . ' ' '
